HOW TO FLY

How to Fly is the place I wish existed when I started flying.

I wanted this to be practical. I wanted to give a step-by-step approach to what we do in an aircraft, far from the dense of regulations, so we went through all of them to bring what matters to you, and no more.

I asked many of questions to some, and closely cooperated with others, but the people that left a mark in how to fly are that top of the class, the best among the best, form fighter jet pilots, colleagues, to top level instructors and seasoned airliner captains.

How to Fly is here to take work off your shoulders, and I’m confident it will make your career smoother.

Because I still use it. This is all the knowledge any pilot needs, written for myself and my fellow aviators.

My name is Ales Aranburu. I started flying when I was 19 years old, and decided to take some notes in flight not to forget them later on.

They turned out to be useful for my colleagues, and after improving them, I saw the potential and decided to go all in to write a full manual to help the student pilots that were coming after me.

Almost a decade later, I am a seasoned executive pilot, I have flown from the smallest strips in Europe to the biggest and most complex airports in the continent. Everything I’ve learned along the way has gone directly to the publications.

I couldn’t have made this book without the help of many friends and professionals of the industry. The people listed here were crucial for this book to reach the excellence.

JOSÉ LUIS PÉREZ-ÍÑIGO MARTENS. CPL Holder

Luis is an extraordinary human being, with a brain filled with information, and a library with even more knowledge at home. Early on, he developed an expertise in satellite based navigation, and since he joined the How To Fly team, he devoured the regulations to make sure that this book is up to date and all the information shared complies with EASA and ICAO publications.

His help has been paramount to this new edition.

ANDRÉS DEL VAL - A320 + A330 in Iberia and  Vueling

Thanks to his remarkable performance when studying for his ATPL license, Andres got hired straight out of college by one of the largest airliners in Europe. He then transitioned to Iberia, where is now flying long range operations. His expertise and experience in the airliner industry helped this book be useful for all pilots across the board. He reviewed every single page of this book in the early days of this project.

DIEGO LOPEZ - A320 + A330 in Iberia

Diego was also hired straight out of college by Iberia. He was able to share in the pages of this book the experience he acquired early on in airports as complex as Madrid Barajas or Moscow Domodedovo. He brought real life operations and details that are only learned by experience.

EDUARDO ANTON - FI + B737 in Ryanair

Eduardo assisted me writing this book while he was working as Flight Instructor, providing essential information on what his students were failing on, so we could reinforce the areas where new pilots usually struggle. After that, he joined the Boeing 737 fleet of Ryanair, where he is happily smashing aircrafts into runways all over Europe.

RODRIGO CIDAD - A320 in Eurowings

Rodrigo assisted in this book when EASA made big changes in the regulations, he made sure that the book is up to date and you will comply with the rules by following it. He also brought with him an expert insight of the instruments used in large aircrafts and a general overview of IFR flying.

AGUSTÍN RECHE - CFI in Adventia

Agustin was my instructor and a remarkable teacher who instructed me at the end of my IFR phase. He shared a vast amount of knowledge and helped enormously with all the questions I had. Believe me, there were a lot. He pushed me on the quest of writing the manual and has reviewed this book from the very first day.

FLY7 CREW - Pilatus PC12

I was hired by FLY7 when I was 22 years old. It was my first take on real world operations, where I learned the ins and outs of performing commercial and private flights all over Europe, flying from small uncontrolled strips to massive airports like Amsterdam Schiphol or Madrid Barajas.

JETFLY CREW - Pilatus PC12

After the covid, I transitioned to Jetfly, one of the biggest PC12 operators in the world. We would fly between mountains and in small strips weekly, and even got to experience the altiport of Courchevel. With a crew filled with ex-military, acrobatic and extremely experienced pilots, I obtained an immense amount of knowledge that I share in the manual.
